About Training

The majority of training will be done on-the-job using on-job training resources developed by Opportunity Training.

For each industry unit standard there is a corresponding on-job training module incorporating all information required by the Trainee, Trainer and Assessor.

Modules explain the skills to be learned and the standard to which they should be practised. Each training module contains:

  • learning content
  • activities
  • suggestions of where trainees may need to talk to their trainers
  • a Skill Test to be used by the industry assessor when carrying out the assessment of the trainee.
  • a list of key references

The emphasis at all times is upon practical, job-related skills. Trainees do a minimum of reading and a maximum of learning by seeing skills demonstrated and then practising these skills themselves until they can do them to set standards.

Use of the training modules will help ensure quality training to a national standard.

The National Certificates and National Diplomas also incorporate some industry unit standards which have been selected from the National Qualifications Framework to complement the specific industry units. These additional unit standards which are mainly core generic will be a combination of "in-house" and off job Technical Institute or similar training. Some of this training is expected to be in the trainees own time.

Training Delivery

Training shall be delivered in the manner outlined in the provider's management systems approved by Opportunity Training. A training plan should define the methods and time frame for the training. Methods may vary between individual training providers however the outcomes must be consistent.

Training shall cover the skills and knowledge specified in the relevant unit standards. The depth of training, that is, the amount of time involved in obtaining knowledge and experience is not defined. Each trainee will attain the required skills in different time frames according to ability and prior learning. The training coordinator shall be satisfied that the trainee has had sufficient training and practice to be able to demonstrate competency before an application for assessment is made.

Definition of Trainee

A Trainee is an individual who actively participates in a learning environment with the intention of gaining credits for qualifications linked to the National Qualifications Framework and is employed in the crane, scaffolding, rigging or industrial rope access industries in a structured training programme that links a training agreement to an employment contract as specified in Section 3 of the Industry Training Act.

The Training agreement would need to be for a minimum of one year, with training opportunities that would lead to the accumulation of approximately 20 credits per year at levels 1 - 4 on the Framework.
